Learning about this changed my entire workflow for every shot. Really Quick Overview Of ACESĪCES is actually a pretty big deal for both VFX and just film in general. I am still pretty new to it as well but I would love to share what I have learned. And if you don’t know what ACES is, don’t stress it. And let me first start out by saying that it involves the use of ACES to bridge color differences. While that wasn’t the most detailed answer I was looking for, it helped me figure out the essentials so that way I can now share the detailed explanation I wish I had with you.

The answers received, albeit disappointing to me at the time, simply said, “your gamma is wrong and you should consider ACES in your workflow.” So I went to the SideFX forums and finally asked. The results were inconsistent and I grew increasingly frustrated. I read a forum post telling me to change some LUTs inside of resolve and others telling me to adjust gamma. I will admit, this issue perplexed me for a few months and I always tried something new with every animation. Well, if you are reading this article, you most likely have met the same fate I did when importing your rendered frames… WTF happened to the colors!? Quick Backstory And that meant bringing the rendered animation frames into my personal favorite editor, Davinci Resolve, adding some color and just rendering out a small video clip that I could easily share. If all I wanted to do was create some lower thirds, it would be fine if it only worked in the Edit page, but I’d like to do some more advanced compositing, so I need it to work in Fusion. When I first started rendering in Houdini, I was so excited to have a finished product that I would just want to share it with the world. Compositing Mode (Normal/Screen/Overlay/etc) doesn’t change anything either. It doesn’t matter if I go into the inspector and select a preset or not.

I’ve even tried selecting the Title Studio node and hitting 1 on my keyboard to display it in my left window. I’ve also tried removing the video file from the Background input and connecting the output from the Title Studio node (so it’s ONLY the Title Studio) to the Media Out node. I disconnect it from Media Out and connect it to the Background input in the Title Studio node, then connect the output from Title Studio to the Media Out node. I have a video file as my Media In, which I connect to the Media Out node, and it looks fine. I grab the Title Studio node and connect it to the Media Out node and nothing shows up, even if I select a Title Studio preset from the dropdown in the Inspector. However, if I want to use it on the Fusion page, it doesn’t work (I’m on Resolve Studio 18.6 Beta on Windows). I just drag the effect onto a video track and it shows up. I’m trying to learn Title Studio right now and running into an issue in Davinci Resolve.
